How do you know if your lower unit is bad? part 2?
Ok so i’ve asked this question in a early thread, but i didn’t provide enough information for others to understand what i mean by lower unit being bad. I took my outboard/boat to a mariner repair place, he told me that my lower unit is bad because it leaking oil from the vent where water would go inside the motor to cool it. Also i went to another place and they told me to put it in gear and try to turn the propeller to see if oil leaks out and it did. But how do i know if it actually bad. the motor is a mercury 65hp 4 stroke unknown year but the casting seem pretty old enough.
Did the shop give you an estimate with a description of what they wanted to do and the cost for parts and labor?
If you did the simple oil test, and there was no water in the oil (not milky and not clear water) the source might be from power head. The 4 cycle engine shouldn’t be that old. if the oil that drips out, and is blackish, not clear honey looking, you might be burning a little oil.
I would make sure the lower unit is full of oil, with no water, and also the oil for the power head is full, then use the boat normally for at least an hour, then recheck the condition and level.
There is a simple pressure test to check the seals. Have the shop run that test, while you watch. Resealing is normally in the $200 price range, and most mechanics will replace the water pump at the same time. That adds about $60 or so.
If you give us the sr # we can tell you the year, or you can checK a site like www.maxrules yourself.
I was trying to remember a 65HP that was 4 stroke but I can’t remember one. The 3 cyl. 65 was built in the 60′s and 70′s but that was 2 stroke.
If your is a 2 stroke, what you might be seeing is burnt 2 stroke oil, which drips out around the thru prop exhaust area, and is completely normal. Do the pressure test, and check the lower unit oil. If the engine runs and shifts you might not have any problem with the lower unit.

Can a trolling motor a pontoon boat?
I am interested in buying a "family" boat – just for us to get out on the water, enjoying the sun, etc. However, a number of local places (lakes in the state) can only electric engines – no gasoline engines. In other words, a trolling motor. Of course, this is fine for a rowing boat or bass boat (for fishing), but a trolling motor push a pontoon boat through the water? Thanks! Please – boat experts alone – not just conjecture. I'm already guessing:) SMILE!
The best way to do it, is to buy a pontoon with two engines at the .. A barge moves through the water much easier than a normal boot, so you can get away with lower horsepower engines .. and theres no need for a trolling motor just work .. but if you are a Motors are allowed where more .. I feel satisfied with just one engine only trollingt … 9.9 has a good job .. You can just tilt when an electric engine more .. In some cases rare, but you may need to prop … Good Luck to remove

I have a shifter, a 1969 Johnson outboard boat motor, what is the cheapest way to go?
I own a Johnson 20r69d 1969 outboard boat motor. The boat came with a mercury / Kiekhaufer shifter box. I can work on the gas, but the shifter will not pull the shifter handle to the engine far enough to move forward. I tried to adjust the gears many times, but there is no way that will work. I just have a dual universal shifter? I also buy new cables? I'm just looking for the best way to do this without spending much money.
ok if used, try ebay some good deals there if you want a new OEM to IBoats. com everything you could ever want or need to go there

You can power an outboard motor?
I have a 90hp Evinrude and according to the manual requires a "minimum" of about 350 battery, my brother came over and gave me the other day about a 750 marine battery, it is safe to use a larger battery than recommended
so go ahead and use it, the minimum is the smallest I would never recommend it to a rig engine, such that even in a small boat with just under 500 cca. Remember that only for the engine and does not take into with something else that can be connected to the battery. when a fishing boat with many accessories 350 series is very small. and by the way MARINE BATTERIES are valued at 65 degrees F. not 32. that is why many people who ship the battery in the winter and have trouble using it in other vehicles. on my personal boats and boat I always use my service the biggest battery I can. if you're on the water, which is a bad time for the battery to the ps cheap insurance when problems arise

I'm trying to find out what the boat would be best oil for use in pulling a suburban February 1?
I'm going to use the truck to pull a boat and It has 92,000 miles on it. It does not burn or leak oil. I just want the best, but do not know what that is. I thought about using Royal Purple, the part store said not to.
Your Suburban calls for 5W-30. Frankly, forget any brand of partial synthetic motor oil. The reason is: There is not a company that actually tells you the exact percentage of the synthetic oil it contains. Give your truck added protection by using a fully synthetic Mobil 1 Truck & SUV 5W-30. It is a fact that oil companies secretly are two very important anti-wear additives (zinc and phosphorus), because the life of catylitic converters. Under no circumstances use 10W-40 in any modern gasoline engine. Any higher viscosity than 5W-30 will not cool the engine as well. The oil pump should also work harder highly viscous oil robs you of power.

Where can I find parts for a Montgomery Ward / clinton 7 hp outboard motor?
Got it recently from the list, and it is thought to fuel problems delivery via the fuel pump. It is an air-cooled outboard with a water element to remain cool I guess outlet. The needle and seat in the carb as well and Fuel is gravity fed, the engine is running. Before I even cracking open something else, there's a place that still carries parts on this earth, or am I now have a battery and electric fuel pump carry around?

Using outboard boat during the cold weather.and winterizing?
I do not own an outboard so far I only Mercruiser / O. Had always winterized by a shop. It seems from what I've read and asked of people is pretty easy winterizing outboard motors. I have a 1976 Johnson 85 hp Javelin. If I understand correctly winterizing an outboard motor is simply draining the water by lowering it, draining the lower unit oil to ensure there is no water in it, and cover the cylinders or even just using the stabilizer in the gas and / or running out of gas. If this is correct, then it seems that I should be able to boat use in cold weather and only steps from the above applications. I would like feedback from people who use outboards during the winter. One last question. Is there any advantage in marine antifreeze running through it? I mean with antifreeze to flush the joints between the winter use. It is only used in fresh water
Your pretty much on track …….. The most important thing is to fog the engine as it will not be used for 30 days, then hit the engine down (not angled). A difficult problem is that winter snow can pile up and get into the exhaust through the hub, with thawing and refreezing can crack the case. What we did was duct tape over the end of the plug, and / or embed in a plastic bag or bags. If you suspect that mud or sand has accumulated in the water jacket in the head, it can not hurt to put a little antifreeze in the marine system. Otherwise no need to do that. . Do not leave fuel in the engine or tank …….. E-10 has a short shelf life …… even with stabilization. I use my boat through early January, then pick up again in March.

how does a pound thrust electric outboard boat motor horsepower compared to gas outboard boat motors
electric motors power list as pounds thrust. list of gas power in terms of power. I would like to know how they compare.
There is a formula that converts watts to HP but generally may use 15 lbs of thrust equal to 1 HP.

What is the easiest way to 2hp outboard boat engines clean after use?
I live in a unit after use and dont want the small outboard motor road rust whats the easiest way to clean it?
You work in salt water? I put mine in a garbage can rinse and dry with a cloth / paper towels. I then spray a thin layer of WD-40 on and wipe with another clean cloth. This causes the water and rust off really well. My bike looks good and still start First or second draw. It is a 1955 Johnson and everything I've read it twice recoil.
