Fuel for my Yanmar diesel engine on the boat.?
Hi – I’m new to boat ownership and I find myself asking the question of whether or not the diesel fuel at a marine fuel dock is the exact same diesel that one would find at a local gas station (#2 diesel). I have a Yanmar inboard diesel engine in my boat.
Justin
Offroad diesel is not taxed the same as Road diesel. As of 3 years ago when I was working as a tankerman the ONLY difference between offroad and road diesel was the die they added to make certain that truckers do not run it in their 18 wheelers.
Whats wild is once I loaded a barge with 420,000 gallons of road diesel that at the time was sellign for 1.40 a gallon, then the guys from the plant came to the barge, dumped in their die and made it offroad diesle that was selling for 1.05 a gallon
I always thought it would be cool to figure out how I could keep the diesel from mixing so that we could sell it as the more expensive product, but purchase it as the cheeper.
EDIT: please note, they have phased in ULSD since i quit that job. I am not certain if Offroad diesel is also Ultra low sulfer.

How do you know if your lower unit is bad? part 2?
Ok so i’ve asked this question in a early thread, but i didn’t provide enough information for others to understand what i mean by lower unit being bad. I took my outboard/boat to a mariner repair place, he told me that my lower unit is bad because it leaking oil from the vent where water would go inside the motor to cool it. Also i went to another place and they told me to put it in gear and try to turn the propeller to see if oil leaks out and it did. But how do i know if it actually bad. the motor is a mercury 65hp 4 stroke unknown year but the casting seem pretty old enough.
Did the shop give you an estimate with a description of what they wanted to do and the cost for parts and labor?
If you did the simple oil test, and there was no water in the oil (not milky and not clear water) the source might be from power head. The 4 cycle engine shouldn’t be that old. if the oil that drips out, and is blackish, not clear honey looking, you might be burning a little oil.
I would make sure the lower unit is full of oil, with no water, and also the oil for the power head is full, then use the boat normally for at least an hour, then recheck the condition and level.
There is a simple pressure test to check the seals. Have the shop run that test, while you watch. Resealing is normally in the $200 price range, and most mechanics will replace the water pump at the same time. That adds about $60 or so.
If you give us the sr # we can tell you the year, or you can checK a site like www.maxrules yourself.
I was trying to remember a 65HP that was 4 stroke but I can’t remember one. The 3 cyl. 65 was built in the 60′s and 70′s but that was 2 stroke.
If your is a 2 stroke, what you might be seeing is burnt 2 stroke oil, which drips out around the thru prop exhaust area, and is completely normal. Do the pressure test, and check the lower unit oil. If the engine runs and shifts you might not have any problem with the lower unit.

on the engine. Package comes with remote control steering and control cables. What should I pay for this bike.
5 years old. If a record store on approximately one third of the new price, if not is touched or started for two or three years than half new price. Without seeing it I have no opinion.

HOW TO REPLACE WATER PUMP “MERCURY 150 OUTBOARD”
Can you tell what's wrong with my outboard trim?
I have a 1992 Mercury 150. The trim recently went out, but not quite. The victims are still down, but it does want to trim up. The engine is still running, I can hear, but when I hit the UP button, I only hear a click. We have tried changing the relay, but still going down. Can the bad engine, even though we can still hear when we walk down push? Or would it be a wiring problem?
You could trip an auto reset circuit breaker. Or could be a worn switch or corrosion / loose connection in the circuit, the "click" is an arc. A 12V multimeter or test light? See if there is voltage to the relay. Inspect your wiring for corrosion / loose connections. Keep an eye on any place of isolation can get sanded and white wires come into contact. Check switch, fuse box, relays, everywhere there is a connection. Take it apart and polishing until it seems, if you use sandpaper needs.

Tilt Motor Sea Ray 74 issue.?
I recently bought a 1974 18 'Sea Ray SRV 190 with an inboard / outboard motor. When I got the guy told me always if he had a part of the outboard engine to tow lifts he always bows to give the rest of the way because it would be the rest of the road. Today when I boat to pull off the more the engine just would go and I saw the engine trim motor was broke. Anyways my question is this a normal problem with these old boats and what are good practice for tipping when towing an home.
This is not normal. You do not say what type of engine and drive in the boat, so I assume that this type of system had a OMC.On many problems (engine not working, the tank is always full of water) was just a very bad design. As to tow your boat, you must be sure that your drive is high skeg enough of the way so it will not break if you hit and over bumps or potholes.Hope this answers your question.

can I leave a jet boat in the water for 4 months?
I bought a 2003 jet boat with Mericruiser engine, I would leave in water for summer on the lake but I'm affaid Algie the building may be part of the pump motor or a ruin, is it safe or should I purchase a lift? please help
If the two cycles, I would not unless I was using it on a very regular basis – like every other day. On a two stroke engine, the engine of the sun warms and cools in the evening. When the air in the engine cylinder with a cool night, it creates a vacuum and suck the water into the open cylinder. Eventually filling the cylinder enough so you can not turn the engine. This happened to a buddy of mine. He had two engines. If he could get a start and get the boat moving, he was able to vacuum the water out and start the other engine network. A few times he wound up getting a tow to the ramp, lifting the boat from the water, he was able to start it. Good Luck. Mike

How can I get my 87 140hp Evinrude outboard run smoother?
So I have a '87 Evinrude 140hp 2 stroke outboard (with VRO) and slightly more than 600 hours, all reliable as heck. The starter was replaced and the engine looks cosemetically immaculate under the hood., Shiny, no rust on the engine block, etc. It runs strong, but the idle is a little rough at lower speeds, at just under 1500. She is a gass guzzler and I prefer an e-tec, but I'm keeping this tank of a motor to die, and till then I would like a nicer idle
Here's what I like to do in your situation, read the spark plugs – they should all be nearly identical – looking to golden brown insulator, expect a bit of carbon on the rim, a light coating of oil after idling expected, the center electrode flat along the top. Use only QL77JC4 champion – it is the perfect plug for that engine. NGK makes a great plug, but they are not an exact match for heat range (I believe this is why merc guys always bash champion – mercenaries error champs). Spark plug specification is 0030 but if you have a lot of trolls or low speed, open until 0035 or even 0040, it will help. compression test – anything above 100 would be good, with no more than 5% variation from good to bad – but expect 125 or more. Carb rebuild … she always seems happier with a fresh carb rebuild. And there is way worse ways to spend an afternoon. What is your RPMs at WOT? The motor needs to turn 6000 into pleasant stay – no less at full gas, they carry on all gas settings. Tote promotes coking. Coked-up cylinders lead to sticky rings, lost compression, and ultimately, catastrophic failure. If get too close, consider taking a look at your setup – if you have enough space to raise the motor on the transom, or drop an inch or two prop pitch. A good man can gag adjusting the amount of the cup on your Transmission to fit your boat.

I attempt to start the serial number on a Mercury outboard 2hp.?
The bonnet is made of plastic, dark gray in color and has "Thruster of Mercury Marine "in white letters on them. I've looked all IT & no part numbers or names anywhere to say what it was made.Usually serial numbers are stamped to the mounting bracket, but on this one. Does anyone know what model year is my description? I have a picture of it here if I can somehow get. I have a new fuel valve of a broken and replaced my local Mercury dealer says that the component is no longer available and does not know the age of the engine. Thanks.
My friend had a Mercury outboard motor and had the same problem, he contacted a dealer and they told him that on an aluminum core plug on the side of the block, had been a powerful model but not sure if this will help, check it out anyway, it may destroy your engine.

No, I'm just kidding you, but really, you have to pick up a few chicks chevy 454's (not on the boat have you) and a wet bar. by the way sports cars are cheaper and have the same effect.

What is the minimum horsepower requirement for a boat to plane?
I would meter is constructed from aluminum planing boat for three occupants, length about 5 to 6, with a light and low, fully enclosed, aluminum cabin. It's supposed to be a commuter boat for use on the Otago Harbour in the south of New Zealand. I want to be able to see the plane, but the maximum speed is 25 knots – which I hope to do, give or take about 8 knots. I like the idea of using a Yanmar diesel outboard. They come with 39 hp. Would I need that much? Thanks.
I would say you have a hope in hell. For a boat that size, and this would at least 90hp I would say, if you're in goping swelling or raw condistions etc then a min of 115, which is rated the boat because that will give you an idea.
